Electromagnetic Door Closers

Electromagnetic door closers use an electromagnet to hold a door in the open position and release it to close automatically in the event of an emergency or power failure. They are commonly used in commercial and public buildings to ensure that fire doors and other emergency exits are properly secured while allowing for easy access and egress.

When the door is being held open, the electromagnet is energised. When the power is interrupted or a fire alarm is triggered, the electromagnet is de-energized, allowing the door to close automatically. They are often used in conjunction with other fire safety systems, such as smoke detectors and sprinkler systems, to provide a comprehensive fire protection solution.

Most electromagnetic door closers are also be equipped with adjustable closing speeds and hold-open times, allowing for greater control and flexibility in the application.

In the UK, electromagnetic door closers are subject to a range of standards and regulations to ensure their safety and performance. Tthe key standards and regulations that apply to electromagnetic door closers in the UK are:

  • BS EN 1155: This is the European standard for power-operated pedestrian doorsets, which includes electromagnetic door closers. This standard sets out the requirements for the safety and performance of electromagnetic door closers, including durability, fire resistance, and electromagnetic compatibilit
  • BS 7273-4: This British Standard provides guidance on the use of electromagnetic door holders and their interface with fire detection and alarm systems. It specifies the installation and testing requirements for electromagnetic door holders to ensure they are compatible with fire alarm systems and can be released in the event of a fire.
