Touch Bars

Touch bars are a type of door hardware that allows for easy exit from a building in case of an emergency. Touch bars are typically installed on emergency exit doors and are designed to be easy to use by anyone, including those who may have limited mobility or who are carrying items.

Touch bars are activated by pressing on a horizontal bar that runs along the width of the door, which releases the latch and allows the door to open. When the door is closed, the latch is automatically engaged to keep the door securely shut.

Touch bars are often used in conjunction with panic bolts, which are similar to touch bars but are designed for use on doors that do not require a latch, such as emergency escape routes.

In the UK, touch bars are subject to the BS EN 1125 standard, which specifies requirements and test methods for panic exit devices operated by a horizontal bar, for use on escape routes.

It is important to ensure that touch bars installed in buildings comply with this standard to ensure safety and accessibility for all building occupants. Building owners, operators, and managers should consult with qualified professionals to ensure that their touch bars meet the relevant standards and regulations.
